The Martin County Board of Commissioners is the body charged by law with the management of the affairs of Martin County. The County Board operates as a deliberative and legislative assembly, meeting to discuss and determine the direction and policies of the County within the confines of state and federal law. The County Board functions within the statutory framework of Minnesota law. General duties, powers and responsibilities are found in Minnesota Statutes, especially but not exclusively Chapters 370, 373, 375 and 383D.

The Martin County Board of Commissioners meets regularly on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Copies of the tentative agenda are available from the County Coordinator's Office at the Martin County Courthouse on the Friday afternoon preceding the Board meeting. Persons, who wish to appear before the Board, or desire to have a matter considered by the Board, must contact the County Coordinator's Office prior to 4:00 p.m. on the Thursday preceding the meeting. A summary of the matter to be considered must accompany all requests for the time on the agenda. Any requested time without summary information by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to the scheduled meeting will be removed from the agenda.

About the Commission

Martin County has the most popular form of county government--the commission form. There are five Commissioners who serve for 4 year overlapping terms and are elected by district. The Martin County Board convenes the first, third Tuesday of each month, and at other times as necessary.

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Establishing a budget and levying taxes to finance County services.
  2. Providing assistance to constituents as their elected representative.
  3. Appointing members to County Board committees (with the exception of elected officials).
  4. Appoint members to Citizen Advisory Board and Commissions
  5. Serving on the Human Service Board as well as several other committees and boards.
  6. Managing county roads, buildings, and property.
  7. Planning land use within the county
  8. Authorizing expenditures.
  9. Serving as employer for County personnel.
  10. Manage County Drainage Systems (County Ditches and  Judicial Ditches)

The Board functions as the legislative and administrative head of Martin County. The powers of the Board are outlined in Minnesota Statutes. The management and control of County property and the transaction of business affairs of the County are vested in the Board.
