Youth Internship Program - Martin County/Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC)
The Martin County/MVAC Internship Program is an innovative initiative for college students originally from Martin County. The Internship program provides the participants not only employment, but also training, to explore career options, earn college credit, and to potentially launch a career right here in their home county. This initiative was accomplished through the collaborative efforts by Martin County, Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC), South Central Workforce Council, Minnesota Workforce Center to design an affordable and marketable internship program. Eligible college age students 18-23 year of age, complete an online application and submit a resume, are interviewed by a career counselor, and then are matched with a local business, non-profits, or government agencies that have intern opportunities available. The business/agencies interview the intern for hire. A brief orientation is completed and interns are placed up to 8 weeks internship with pay. The end results were so successful that several students have started careers in Martin County and many other will return from school breaks to continue with their previous internship placement as employees and will eventually start their with the business/agency. Internships programs are one way for rural Minnesota counties to reinvigorate their economies and provide career opportunities to their youth.
